While facing serious financial issues the Pike County Commission developed a plan to reduce debt. After sticking to their plan for several years, the commission says they are getting closer to their goal.
“We were in a very difficult financial position ten years ago and we’ve improved quite a bit during that interim time,” says County Administrator Harry Sanders.
The county was in the red by 1.25 million dollars now it has a surplus of more than 1.2 million.
“We’re on track to reach our goal for our 10 year plan,” says Sanders.
While the Pike County Commission say they are improving financially, there are still many challenges ahead starting with several buildings. They include the Pike County Courthouse, the Jail, the Extension Office and the County’s Board of Education building.
“Its necessary for us to maintain all those buildings and some of them are in much need of repair.”
There’s also a constant need to repair more than 700 miles of roads.
“The commission has done very well at this. They’ve really cut back on spending where they could and tried to reach these goals by reducing our debts so that we can do more in the future,” says McKenzie Wilson.
“The county has a lot of responsibility that and a lot of decisions that they have to make,” says Sanders.
