A long awaited dream for people in Pike County as leaders break ground on the future home of the Pike Animal Shelter.
“People had doubts and we had doubts at times whether we could do it,” says Jack Rainey.
Humane Society workers say the current shelter is outdated and no longer suits the needs of the county. It can only ouse 20 dogs. The new shelter is 3,000 sq ft. and will house at least 40 dogs and up to 20 cats.
“Its a glorious day for animals like Wiley here who are going to have an animal shelter that is modern and professional and clean and healthy and something that we can all be so very proud of,” says Donna Schubert.
“We all came together. The city bought in, the county bought in. The Pike Animal Coalition bought in and the Pike County Humane Society bought it and the group together just said its time,” says Rainey.
Humane Society leaders say the new shelter will not only help alleviate problems with strays in the county, but it will also help with finding forever homes for the animals.
“Going to be the greatest facility around. Its just outstanding,” says Rainey.
