WETUMPKA, Ala. (WAKA) – The body of an 18-year-old swimmer who was a student at Faulkner University in Montgomery has been recovered from Corn Creek Park in Wetumpka following a search involving several agencies.

Wetumpka police say Qadir Lyle of Decatur went underwater yesterday afternoon and did not resurface. At about 4:15PM, Wetumpka police and fire crews were called to search for him. The search lasted until dark, and due to weather conditions, was suspended.

This morning, the search resumed at daylight. Lyle’s body was found at around 10:25AM. Corn Creek flows into the Coosa River north of downtown Wetumpka.

Lyle was a freshman student and football player at Faulkner University.

“Our hearts are with Qadir’s family, teammates, coaches, friends and all those affected by this tragic loss,” said Faulkner University President Mitch Henry. Counseling and ministry support have been made available on campus for students, faculty and staff who need someone to talk with or pray with during this difficult time.

Several agencies helped in the recovery efforts, including the Elmore County EMA, the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, ALEA Aviation and Marine Police, Montgomery Fire & Rescue, Montgomery Police Department and the State Game and Fish.

The Division D Dive Team of the Wetumpka Police Department extends its appreciation to all of the agencies and personnel who assisted with the search and recovery efforts.
