Dalraida Family YMCA reopens with new name, new exercise spaces

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – An east Montgomery YMCA reopened Friday with new improvements and a new name.

Community leaders unveiled the Dalraida Family ‘Y’, which is formerly known as the East Family YMCA.

The reopening follows a $2.5 million dollar transformation after local community leaders and advocates say it needed a new refresh.

“This is a place where we can grow up, we can be the best versions of ourselves,” says Justin Castanza, Montgomery County Commissioner for District 3.

Castanza and his family live in the area and says the renovation will help serve even more families.

“It’s an easy yes when the ‘Y’ has a need,” he said. “Because we know that our resources are going to be used well. The people are going to love the community and really, we are all going to be better because of it.”

The renovation took about a year and a half to complete and features an additional 7,000 square feet of wellness space, a new weight room, cardio and group exercise spaces, and a Y-town for kids.

“It’s really cool about the ‘Y’ towns are is they are direct replicas of businesses in our community,” says AJ Hernandez, who is the CEO of the YMCA of Greater Montgomery. “And so you see a Publix, you see a fire station, you see a sheriff, you see Faulkner. So many cool spaces in there. Reason being is we want families and kids to be able to connect the local community right? We want them to be able to imagine themselves serving or working in those spaces. And its a fun way for kids to be able to see themselves as something great.”

The Dalraida Family YMCA is located at 3407 Pelzer avenue in Montgomery.
