Tax Filers are Warned of Scammers
Its tax season and millions of people are sharing their personal information. But some try to take advantage of tax payers.
Tax Preparers say to be alert and file early. Be mindful that the IRS will never send emails or ask for debit or credit card information over the phone. People that have become victim of fraud say scammers are getting more creative and once targeted it takes awhile for you to get your original refund.
“Its an aggravation because you know that you’re going to have to deal with the federal government and go through their bureaucracies – one to convince them who you are and two to convince them that you’re not really scamming them,” says Wade Turner.
If you get a phone call from someone who says they are from IRS you are asked to report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.
