New Study Predicts Post Surgery Complications

More than half of all operations in the U.S. are performed on patients 65 and older.

In a study published in the journal of the American Medical Association, researchers say they’ve found a way to predict which elderly patients are at risk for serious post-op complications.

The study’s authors looked at 275 elderly patients and assigned them a score based on their dementia, nutrition levels, and other factors.

Researchers say that score helped predict which patients were likely to survive, endure a long hospital stay, or require nursing home care after surgery.
