Auburn’s Corey Maggard named semifinalist for National Assistant Golf Coach of the Year
AUBURN, Ala. (auburntigers.com) – Auburn’s Corey Maggard has been named a semifinalist for the Jan Strickland Award that goes to the national assistant golf coach of the year, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced on Tuesday.
The Tigers have been ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of the season and are currently No. 2 with four team victories and six individual titles this year.
Auburn has won the Carpet Capital Collegiate, U.S. Collegiate Championship, Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate and Seminole Intercollegiate.
Michael Johnson, who has been ranked as the top golfer in the country for much of the season, broke the Auburn single-season record for victories with three. The Birmingham, Ala., native has won the Primland Collegiate Invitational, Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate and Schenkel Invitational.
Johnson’s 69.38 stroke average is currently the lowest single-season stroke average in Auburn history.
Will Long was co-medalist at the U.S. Collegiate Championship, Graysen Huff won the ASU Fall Beach Classic and Trace Crowe won the USA Individual Tournament this year.
Maggard is in his second season as an assistant coach at Auburn under Nick Clinard.
Auburn had the fourth best NCAA Championship finish in school history by finishing 12th last season. The Tigers won three consecutive tournaments with three straight medalists, all different, in the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate, Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner and the Schenkel Invitational in 2015.
The award is presented to the NCAA Division I, II, II, NAIA or NJCAA assistant coach that has excelled in working with their student-athletes both on the course and in the classroom.
