Troy May Add Pre-Trial Diversion Program

A court program in Troy is aiming to give first time offenders a second chance.Â
Â
Troy court officials are working on creating a pre-trial diversion program. They are gearing it towards charges including minors in possession or consumption of alcohol.Â
Â
How it would work is the defendant would have the option to pay court costs and fees for alcohol education. The course would last a few hours one evening for four straight weeks and they’d also have to do community service for the city of Troy.Â
Â
Court officials saw a need with the number of citations due to Troy being a college town.Â
Â
Neal Armstrong, Troy court administrator/clerk said, “Like the people that are majoring in education, nursing, criminal justice, if they graduate Troy University and leave here with a criminal record that record can really inhibit them and finding a job and being gainfully employed down the road when all they did was really make a simple mistake, they aren’t criminals.”Â
Â
The Troy City Council approved the first reading for the new program at their meeting this week. Final vote will be next council meeting.Â
Â
If passed officials hope to have the program started by the beginning of June.Â
