Kluber gets 100th win, Yankees sweep Tigers to reach .500
UNDATED (AP) — Corey Kluber (KLOO’-bur) handcuffed Detroit batters to gain his 100th career win with his most dominant performance since 2018 as the New York Yankees beat the Tigers 2-0.
Kluber looked like the pitcher who won AL Cy Young Awards with Cleveland in 2014 and 2017, before injuries wrecked his 2019 and 2020 seasons. The 35-year-old right-hander allowed two hits in eight innings, walked one and struck out 10 to reach double digits for the 47th time but first since Sept. 24, 2018.
The Yankees got back to .500 by completing their first series sweep this season.
Elsewhere in the majors:
— Max Scherzer pitched a five-hitter and the Washington Nationals defeated the Miami Marlins 3-1. Scherzer hustled out of Nationals Park after the game to join wife Erica for the birth of their third child on Sunday night. Scherzer carried a shutout into the ninth inning before Isan Diaz led off with a home run. The right-hander struck out nine without a walk and hit a batter. It was the 12th career complete game for Scherzer, who got loud applause from the approximately 8,500 fans when he came out to start the ninth. Ryan Zimmerman hit a three-run homer for Washington, which improved to .500 with its fourth straight win..
— David Dahl and Brock Holt hit RBI singles in Texas’ three-run eighth, and the Rangers took advantage of a costly error on Alex Verdugo, topping the Boston Red Sox 5-3. Isiah Kiner-Falefa homered to help Texas take three of four games against the AL East leaders and win consecutive games for the first time since April 18-19. Josh Sborz got three outs for the win, and Ian Kennedy worked the ninth for his seventh save in seven opportunities. Xander Bogaerts had three hits for Boston, including his fifth homer. Verdugo finished with two hits.
— Carlos Martínez pitched eight marvelous innings, Harrison Bader hit an early three-run homer and the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 for a three-game sweep. St. Louis has won seven straight against the Pirates and is 20-6 versus Pittsburgh since the start of the 2019 season. The sweep was the second in three series for the Cardinals, who have won eight of 10 overall. Bader’s home run off rookie Wil Crowe came with one out in the second inning. Martínez allowed five hits and two walks. He struck out three and retired his final eight batters. Alex Reyes retired the side in order in the ninth for his seventh save.
— A.J. Pollock drove in eight runs and Matt Beatty drove in seven, with both players hitting early grand slams in a startling power show that sent the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Milwaukee Brewers 16-4. Pollock homered twice and doubled while Beaty went 4 of 6 and scored three times. Their slams came against Alec Bettinger, who gave up 11 runs in his big league debut. This was the first time in franchise history the Dodgers had two players with at least seven RBIs in the same game. The last time it happened for any MLB team was in 2007 when Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez did it for Texas.
— Marcus Semien homered and drove in four runs as Toronto finished off a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves with a 7-2 win after Blue Jays newcomer George Springer exited early. There was no immediate announcement on why Joe Panik pinch-hit for Springer in the sixth inning. Springer was the designated hitter for the fourth consecutive game since making his Toronto debut Wednesday. The 2017 World Series MVP signed a team-record $150 million, six-year deal with the Blue Jays this offseason but missed time because of a strained oblique and quadriceps strain. Semien hit a two-run homer to help Toronto win for the seventh time in nine games.
— Austin Meadows hit a three-run homer and later scored the go-ahead run on Manuel Margot’s pinch-hit single in the seventh inning as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Houston Astros 5-4. The Rays avoided a three-game sweep in the series between the last two American League champions. Meadows homered in the fifth to make it 3-all. With the score tied at 4 in the seventh, Meadows was hit by a pitch from Brooks Raley and later scored when Margot punched a hit through the right side. Yordan Alvarez homered and doubled for Houston.
— José Ramirez and Cesar Hernandez homered, Amed Rosario had three hits and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 5-0. Zach Plesac and three relievers combined to limit the White Sox to four hits as Cleveland took two of three in a series between AL Central foes that both made the playoffs last year. The Indians have won five of their last seven. Andrew Vaughn had two hits for the White Sox, who had won seven of nine. Ramirez hit a two-run shot — his eighth homer of the season — off Codi Heuer in a three-run seventh inning.
— Andrelton Simmons and Mitch Garver homered in a seven-run third inning, and rookie Alex Kirillof went deep for the fourth time in three games as the Minnesota Twins routed the Kansas City Royals 13-4. José Berríos (beh-REE’-ohs) took advantage of Minnesota’s tear at the plate to win for the first time in four starts. Berríos gave up four runs and struck out nine in six innings. The Twins have won three of four and scored 35 runs during that stretch. Royals starter Brad Keller was undone by the long ball and his own defense. Keller gave up all seven runs in the third, but only two were earned after a pair of errors by third baseman Hunter Dozier.
— Nick Castellanos hit a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a wild 13-12 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Jesse Winker began the Cincinnati 10th on second and advanced on Willson Contreras’ passed ball. Castellanos then poked a liner into center field against Craig Kimbrel. Castellanos finished with five hits and four RBIs against his former team, including two of the Reds’ five homers. Chicago also went deep five times, but lost for the seventh time in nine games.

Braves put catchers Travis d’Arnaud, Alex Jackson on IL
UNDATED (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have put catchers Travis d’Arnaud (dahr-NOH’) and Alex Jackson on the injured list.
D’Arnaud was placed on the 60-day IL Sunday with a left thumb sprain after getting hurt on a tag play at the plate in the sixth inning of Saturday night’s game against Toronto. Jackson, who replaced d’Arnaud in the game, went on the 10-day IL with a strained left hamstring.
Catcher William Contreras was recalled from the Braves’ alternate site and started Sunday against the Blue Jays. Catcher Jeff Mathis had his contract purchased from alternate site.
In other MLB news:
— Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Dustin May has been put on the 10-day injured list with an arm ailment. May threw just 27 pitches Saturday night in Milwaukee. Manager Dave Roberts said May felt “a shooting sensation” through his arm on a curveball he threw. The 23-year-old May is 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA in five starts this season. He joins a crowd of Dodgers pitchers on the injured list that also includes David Price, Joe Kelly and several more.
— Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert exited Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Indians with a strained right hip flexor. Robert fell to the ground after beating out an infield single to third base in the first inning. He was helped off the field while putting no weight on his right leg. X-rays were negative, and he will be evaluated Monday. Adam Eaton replaced Robert as a pinch-runner and moved to right field while Leury García took over in center.
— The Milwaukee Brewers have boosted their depleted catching situation by reacquiring Jacob Nottingham from the Seattle Mariners for cash. Seattle had claimed Nottingham off waivers from Milwaukee last week but then designated him for assignment. Catchers Omar Narváez and Manny Piña on the injured list over the last week.
— Oakland Athletics left-hander Jesús Luzardo will be off the mound for a while. And maybe off video games, too. Luzardo is out indefinitely after breaking the pinkie finger on his pitching hand while playing a video game. An X-ray after Saturday’s loss to Baltimore showed a hairline fracture and Luzardo was put on the 10-day injured list Sunday. Oakland manager Bob Melvin said Luzardo was playing a video game before his start yesterday and accidentally bumped his hand on a desk.

The cars of Ed Jones, Dalton Kellett and Conor Daly also were destroyed in the crash that happened after the green flag had dropped, but before they crossed the start-finish line. Daly was starting at the back of the 24-car field. His car slid upside down along the front stretch before planting into the infield grass and flipping back onto its wheels. Daly was OK.
