The Confederate Monument stands tall on the Capitol grounds dating back to the 1880’s in memorial of the 122 thousand soldiers of the Confederacy.
“It’s where we were, what we did, where we came from, so we don’t repeat mistakes, we learn from mistakes and move forward. I think that’s important especially because in today’s culture, they would have us forget these veterans because it’s not politically correct. And it’s our job to see to it that that doesn’t happen,” said Mike Williams, State Adjutant with Sons of Confederate Veterans
While the flags were removed last summer at the memorial, others still believe we should have a day to remember the confederacy.

Ryan Banks on Facebook tells us, “Yes, we should commentate Confederate Memorial Day. It’s part of our Southern heritage.”

But not everyone agrees.

Alma Gayle says, “A ‘memorial day’ for traitors that wanted no part of the United States because they wanted to keep slaves. No, this should be done away with.”
Lisa Ferrell tells us, “If you want to eliminate every holiday or event that offends someone, I do not think we would be celebrating much of anything any more. It seems like there is always someone, somewhere that is offended by everything.”

And others agree… And say they don’t mind having a holiday for any reason.

“I mean we deserve as many holidays as we possibly can get… So yeah I think it should be a holiday,” said Valerie Gilmore.
