“Coming up I was one of 14 kids and we could not afford a structured basketball camp or any kind of camp for that matter, and I realized coming from such a hardship that there are other kids just like me,” Burkette said.

After establishing himself in the professional world, he started a basketball camp to benefit kids like himself.

“This was just one of the things that was in the back of my mind I said I would fulfill. I wanted to make it happen for kids that had a desire to participate in a sports camp that otherwise is financially challenged and unable to do so.”

Burkette does not put on the camp alone. He brings in coaches and volunteers that like helping kids just as much as he does.

“I didn’t have a lot of opportunities growing up, so I wanted to give back to the little kids and help them fulfill their dreams of playing basketball,” said former ASU Hornet basketball player and camp counselor Lionel Green.

Burkette’s camp has lasted an incredible 24 years, and although he never expected it to last that long, he is glad it did.

“It’s a blessing by God to give me the ability to continue to strive and meet my goal.”
