Local Reaction to Special Session for State Lottery
Governor Bentley says $225 million could be generated for Medicaid and "essential services" if Alabama had a lottery.
Governor Bentley announces it may be time for a lottery in Alabama.
And some people we talked to say they are all for it.
“I think it would be one way to fund some of the schools so the taxes wouldn’t continue to go up. And I just don’t understand why its fine for WindCreek to have their casinos yet we take our money to Mississippi, Florida, Biloxi with that same money that is going to other states,” said Maynard Nichols.
Terrineshia Stewart agrees. “We have to travel to buy tickets and if they had it here, there would be more chance of us staying home to get tickets than travel to buy tickets.”
Although, some say the lottery needs to come with certain guidelines for the money generated from it.
Deborah Jackson says, “If they put it on the ballot for us to vote, and if it passed, I think the money needs to go towards education, not towards Medicaid.”
Others on facebook tell us no, it’s not time to bring up the lottery.
Rose White says, “Last years special session raised taxes. This can be during the next session. Total waste of tax dollars. He tried this last year also.”
Robert Sells says, “We voted on this during a previous administration. I don’t see the need to put it before the citizens again!”
