Henri postpones Rangers at Red Sox, Twins at Yankees
UNDATED (AP) — Sunday’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park has been postponed because of the approach of Tropical Storm Henri. The Boston area was hit by heavy rain on Sunday morning as Henri approached the northeastern U.S. coastline.
The series finale will be made up on Monday at 1:10 p.m. EDT. Boston’s Nathan Eovaldi (eh-VAHL’-dee) had been set to face Texas’ Kolby Allard.
The Twins and Yankees also postponed their scheduled game. It was rescheduled for Sept. 13 in the Bronx, which means Minnesota will have to disrupt its own six-game homestand to travel east for the makeup game.
The tradeoff is the Twins now get two days off before opening a series at Boston on Tuesday. The Yankees are set to return to action Monday in Atlanta, where they’ll try to extend a season-best nine-game winning streak.
Elsewhere on Sunday’s schedule:
— Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) figures to be the center of attention as the Angels and Indians visit Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to play in the annual Little League Classic. The two-way star with a major league-leading 40 home runs is expected to DH for Los Angeles. Three-time MVP Mike Trout will also be on hand, although he’s still on the injured list with a right calf injury. Trout anticipates Ohtani will be an easy favorite among the 12-year-olds gathered in Williamsport for the tournament.
— The Dodgers will try to cap 10 days filled with dominance over the Mets with one last victory. Los Angeles has won nine straight games, six of them against New York, including a three-game sweep at Citi Field last weekend and three more wins at Dodger Stadium leading into Sunday’s finale. David Price makes his 12th start of the season still seeking his first victory in the role this year. The 13-year veteran has only faced the Mets once, and that was in 2012. New York will start Marcus Stroman, whose ERA is tied for ninth in the majors.
— The Giants will try to win the rubber match of a Bay Bridge Series against Oakland with red-hot Logan Webb on the mound. Webb has won six straight decisions and allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his previous 11 starts. Oakland won the first game and nearly locked up a series win over major league-leading San Francisco until pinch-hitter LaMonte (lah-MAHNT’) Wade Jr. connected for a two-run homer in the ninth inning for a 6-5 win Saturday. A’s righty Frankie Montas will try to slow the Giants on Sunday.

Rays put slugger Nelson Cruz on COVID-19 injured list
UNDATED (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have placed slugger Nelson Cruz on the COVID-19 injured list.
The move was announced Sunday about one hour before the Rays hosted the Chicago White Sox in a matchup of AL division leaders. It was not clear if Cruz tested positive for the coronavirus or was deemed a close contact of someone who did.
The 41-year-old Cruz, acquired from Minnesota last month, is hitting .198 with seven homers and 18 RBIs in 24 games with Tampa Bay. He has a .270 batting average, with 26 homers and 68 RBIs this season. Cruz is 42nd on the career home run list with 443.
The Rays recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Mazza from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move.
In other MLB news:
— Chicago White Sox star shortstop Tim Anderson is out of the starting lineup for the second consecutive game against Tampa Bay due to leg soreness and fatigue. Manager Tony La Russa says Anderson is just sore and not hurt. He could return for Monday night’s game at Toronto. Anderson is hitting .303 with 14 homers and 51 RBIs.
LPGA-WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN
Nordqvist wins Women’s British Open for 3rd major title
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Anna Nordqvist of Sweden has won her third major title with a one-shot victory at the Women’s British Open at Carnoustie.
Nordqvist tapped in for par on the last hole for a 3-under 69 to finish at 12-under par for the tournament.
Nanna Koerstz Madsen of Denmark was tied for the lead with Nordqvist heading down No. 18 but found a greenside bunker with her approach and made double bogey after shanking out. Lizette Salas, Georgia Hall and Madelene Sagstrom were tied for second place at 11 under.
Nordqvist also won the 2009 LPGA Championship and the 2017 Evian Championship.
PGA-NORTHERN TRUST
Final round postponed until Monday
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith are getting an unscheduled day off after moving into a first-place tie through three rounds of the PGA’s Northern Trust in New Jersey. The final round has been moved to Monday with northern New Jersey threatened by Tropical Storm Henri.
Smith fired a course-record 11-under 60 to pull even with Rahm at minus-11. Smith had a chance for the 13th sub-60 score on the PGA Tour before he missed a 12-foot birdie putt on 18 at Liberty National.
Rahm twice hit into the water on the second- and third-easiest holes, dropped a combined three shots and had to rally for a 67.
Rahm and Smith were one shot ahead of Erik van Rooyen of South Africa, who made 10 birdies for a 62.
NASCAR-MICHIGAN
Briscoe, Hamlin get a chance to settle debate at Michigan
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — One week after Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe tangled on the track in NASCAR’s Cup Series, they’ll be back in action Sunday at Michigan.
Hamlin already has clinched a playoff spot. Briscoe can make it in with a win. But the question is whether this week’s Twitter feud will continue when they get behind the wheel.
Hamlin is still seeking his first victory of the season, as is Kevin Harvick, who also can clinch a playoff spot with a win. Harvick has won four of the last five Michigan races, including three straight.
INDYCAR-CHAMPIONSHIP RACE
Erratic driving upends IndyCar’s championship race
MADISON, Ill. (AP) — A rash of overaggressive driving has jumbled the IndyCar championship fight. Pato O’Ward passed Alex Palou for the points lead after Palou was caught in a three-car accident early in Saturday’s race at World Wide Technology Raceway outside of St. Louis. Palou was a victim of yet another sketchy restart of drivers slowing down and forcing a backup behind them. Series veterans believe it’s become a big enough problem that race control needs to get involved. There are three races remaining and five title contenders left. O’Ward now leads Palou by 10 points and just 60 points separate the top five drivers.
