The city of pike road is hard at work getting ready for next school year.

They showed off their progress to Congressman Mike Rogers.

The congressman was impressed by the progress out here.

Crews broke ground on the Pike Road School back in January.

Since then, they’ve been hard at work getting ready for the next school year.

Congressman Rogers says the new school will make a big difference in Montgomery County.

“Folks in Montgomery have the challenge of paying for private school. There are over 30 private schools in montgomery county and it’s just a back breaking expense to anybody who has a child in private school. I think the chance to put their kids in public school that’s the first quality public school is going to be a big deal for them,” said Rogers.

The school will hold students kindergarten through 8th grade.

Superintendent Suzanne Freeman has been watching the construction closely.

“We are over 19 percent complete. We’re on the first level, most of the slabs have been poured on the first level. We have some block going up. You’ll see some walls and hallways, the safe areas you’ll see some of them being constructed with the block wall,” said Freeman.

Those safety areas are required in every new school built in Alabama.

The reinforced walls are designed to help in the event of a tornado.

The next step is to pour the foundation for the gym behind the academic building.

Congressman Rogers says when it’s finished, it will be a boost for pike road.

“People want to be around a quality public school. You can look across this state and you see where they’ve got a quality public school system, the community is thriving economically and very vibrant. This is already a very vibrant community, but you’re going to see a lot of economic development and a lot of growth out here,” said Rogers.

Contractors say the school should be done by May, and ready for the 2015 school year.

Pike Road decided to break away from the montgomery public school system, so most of the students will come from MPS.
