Lottery Passes House

The lottery is one step closer to making it on the November ballot. The House passed the Lottery bill very late Thursday night.

The House started at 10 am Thursday and finally came to a decision just before midnight. But it was not without controversy.
The House debated constitutional amendments to the bill through the day and evening. They first voted and the bill did not pass. They voted to reconsider. Then voted again and it did pass 64-35. Gov. Bentley told the media afterwards it was a victory for the people of the state.
“I would like to thank the Democrats and Republicans for coming together and showing bipartisan leadership. I would just like to say that I appreciate what they did and what they did for the people of this State,” said Gov. Bentley.
The lottery bill now goes to the Senate to approve and then back to the House. For now, the lottery is still alive.
The lottery bill would allow 90 percent of proceeds to go to the General Fund, 10 percent to the Education Fund. The first 100 million dollars would go to Medicaid.
The Senate and House will meet again Friday morning.
