LAMP Students May Move Into Montgomery Mall

Loveless Academic Magnet Program, or LAMP, may be one step closer to moving into the old Montgomery Mall.

Montgomery Public Schools purchased the old Parisians building last year, but the project fell through.

Mayor Strange says the school board still has to officially vote on the move to Parisians, but he’s confident that will happen very soon.

The board talked about doing this when the mall was purchased last year, but put it off because of the cost.

Superintendent Margaret Allen says the school system was looking to expand LAMP to add an international baccalaureate program, but work crews said the building was in worse shape than they thought.

“They came and they gave us reports and we just determined, they didn’t say that the building was condemned, but it was enough for us to say we need to do something proactive,” said Allen.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange is thrilled to see the project finally taking shape. He says the city will be pitching in about $600,000 and he’s happy to see more activity in that part of town.

“We’ll really begin to cement that particular area. We would love for it to be a different scenario but for the dollars and cents the city and county can come together and help them with, this is the biggest bang for the buck,” said Strange.

The school system is sprucing up the old Houston Hill Middle School as a temporary facility.

That should be ready by November.

Allen wants the mall ready for students by the 2016 school year.

Some parents say they’ll miss the old building, but are looking forward to the move.

“My daughter is actually pleased with the building and the facility. The parents and the administration have done a good job of doing the best they can with the facilities, but we are looking forward to moving to a better location,” said Kristan White.

“I think that whatever is best for our students is best for LAMP. I think these are exciting times ahead and we’ll just take one step at a time and see what happens,” said Pamela Swan.

The school board says it’s planning a work session for next week to vote on the move to Parisians.
