A Charles Henderson football player injured in a Friday night game is in a Dothan intensive care unit in critical condition. Officials say he remains unresponsive.

Hundreds of students, faculty and residents attended a candlelight vigil Saturday night. “And it just seems like we don’t have all the answers and we we are just trying to be there for them. We will continue to be there for them everyday,” Dr. Boyd English, CHHS principal said.

Demario Harris Jr. collapsed during the home game against Davidson. He’s a senior cornerback.

Head Coach Brad McCoy says that this happened after a routine tackle, not a head on collision. He says it was not a “malicious hit”. Coach McCoy says Harris got up and walked after the tackle then fell to the ground.

Principal Dr.  Boyd English said, “DeMario is a Trojan he lights up a room with his smile and personality. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him angry at a fellow classmate or a teacher or display himself in a manner that is not worthy of what we strive to be.”

Superintendent Lee Hicks wanted to make students and faculty aware that counseling services are available Saturday and Sunday. Counselors will be in the cafetorium from 2-5 p.m. He also says they have a plan in place to help students cope throughout the week. Homecoming’s also been postponed to give students time to grieve.

Harris is just days away from his 18th birthday. Family, friends, and faculty have been by his side in the hospital throughout the night.
