Mayor McLendon and other city officials gathered downtown to cut the ribbon and open the city’s newest store, True South.

True South Clothing Boutique opened Thursday morning in downtown Greenville. The store is owned and managed by Greenville resident, Chae Brown. Brown owns two other stores downtown, Southern Mint Boutique and Blush Beauty Store.

Brown says the dowtown area may not be most business owners idea of a great location, but to her it’s home.

“Growing up in a small town, I thought that what I wanted was to get out, somewhere bigger, more hustle more bustle, like, just bigger,” she says. “But, as it seems that I’m in Greenville now, and it’s also a small town, but I gravitate towards that now.”

She admits a store closer to Greenville’s Interstate exit might draw more traffic and customers, but she wouldn’t see the clientele she loves.

“I like knowing the customers, a lot of them I know them by name, I know their kids so it’s more like a family. And I guess for us, when we first did Blush, it wasn’t just to start a store, it was kind of putting roots down.”

Mayor Dexter McLendon says there’s always room for new businesses to move into the downtown area.

“A lot of people don’t see our downtown, that’s one of the reasons we’re talking about it right now,” says McLendon. “We’re just not an exit. We’re a great town, with an opportunity downtown for you to be successful. If you’ll come down here and shop at some of these stores, you’ll understand a lot more about Greenville and what we are as a city.”

There are a few store-fronts available for rent in the downtown area. Anyone interested into moving into the stores can contact the City Clerk’s office at (334) 382-2647.
