Americans win Ryder Cup in a rout

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) — The Americans won back the Ryder Cup and perhaps a whole lot more Sunday, sending a strong message to Europe with a powerful performance from their youngest team in history.

Scottie Scheffler, one of six Ryder Cup newcomers for the Americans, took down the No. 1 player in the world with a 4-and-3 victory over Jon Rahm as the scoreboards around Whistling Straits quickly filled with American red.

The final blow came from Collin Morikawa, at 24 the youngest player on the team and already a two-time major champion. He holed a 3-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that assured the Americans at least the 14 1/2 points they needed.

MLB-SCHEDULE

Giolito’s 6 scoreless innings leads White Sox past Indians

UNDATED (AP) — Lucas Giolito pitched six scoreless innings, Eloy Jiménez had a two-run single and the AL champion Chicago White Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians 5-2.

Chicago clinched its first Central title since 2008 by beating the Indians in a doubleheader opener Thursday but is 34-33 since the All-Star break. Giolito allowed five hits, struck out six and threw 100 pitches. Harold Ramirez homered off Craig Kimbrel in the eighth, but Liam Hendricks pitched the ninth for his 36th save.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Kris Bubic has kept up his mastery of the Tigers, pitching seven shutout innings and leading the Kansas City Royals over Detroit 2-1. Bubic gave up only two hits and a walk while striking out six. He allowed just three earned runs over 23 innings in four outings against Detroit this season. Scott Barlow survived a shaky ninth for his 16th save. Whit Merrifield had three hits and scored for Kansas City. Andrew Benintendi contributed two hits and an RBI. Tigers starter Wily Peralta carried a 16-inning scoreless streak into the game. The Royals halted it in the first inning on Benintendi’s RBI single.

— Andy Ibáñez hit a two-run homer and the Texas Rangers avoided their 100th loss for at least a day by beating the Baltimore Orioles 7-4 for a four-game split. Adolis García had two hits and drove in a run for Texas. He set a club rookie record with 256 total bases. Anthony Santander and Pedro Severino homered for the Orioles, who are 4-3 against the Rangers. Baltimore is an AL-worst 50-106, competing with Arizona for the top pick in next year’s amateur draft, and is 176-364 over the last four seasons.

Andrus breaks leg scoring winning run for A’s, goes on IL

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Athletics shortstop Elvis Andrus has been put on the 10-day injured list, a day after breaking his left leg while scoring the winning run against the Houston Astros.

Andrus singled leading off the bottom of the ninth against Ryan Pressly on Saturday and scored from first when Starling Marte lined a double into the gap in right-center. Andrus stumbled rounding third and barely made it to home plate. The Athletics’ 2-1 win kept them in the AL wild-card race.

The A’s also placed infielder Jed Lowrie on the IL on Sunday with a sprained right hand.

NFL-SCHEDULE

Tucker’s NFL-record FG lifts Ravens to 19-17 win over Lions

UNDATED (AP) — Justin Tucker set an NFL record with a 66-yard field goal, bouncing it through off the crossbar as time expired to lift the Baltimore Ravens to a 19-17 win over the Detroit Lions. The kick topped the 64-yard field goal Matt Prater made for Denver against San Francisco on Dec. 8, 2013.

Detroit appeared to be on the verge of victory when Lions kicker Ryan Santoso connected from 35 yards with 1:04 left. Soon after, the Ravens were facing a fourth-and-19 from their own 16 when Lamar Jackson completed a 36-yard pass to Sammy Watkins, and then was able to spike the ball with 7 seconds left to stop the clock.

After an incomplete pass, Tucker blasted a kick down the middle that hit the crossbar and bounced through the uprights for the win, setting off a wild celebration on the field by the Ravens while the stunned crowd in Detroit saw the Lions fall to 0-3.

Elsewhere around the NFL:

— Justin Herbert’s touchdown toss to Mike Williams with 32 seconds to go lifted the Los Angeles Chargers to a 30-24 victory over the Chiefs. The Chargers capitalized on four Kansas City turnovers, including Patrick Mahomes’ second interception in the closing minutes. Herbert finished with 281 yards passing and four touchdowns without an interception, outdueling Mahomes in a matchup of two of the game’s best young quarterbacks. Mahomes finished with 260 yards and three touchdown passes along with his two interceptions. Kansas City also lost two fumbles.

— Myles Garrett recorded a franchise record 4 1/2 sacks on Justin Fields and Cleveland brought down Chicago’s rookie quarterback nine times while harassing him throughout his first NFL start as the Browns thumped the Bears 26-6. Garrett had a field day against Fields, who was thrust into the lineup after veteran Andy Dalton injured his knee last week. Chicago’s offense gained just 47 yards and converted only six first downs.

— Ryan Tannehill threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns as the Tennessee Titans held off the Indianapolis Colts 25-16 to grab an early tiebreaker in the AFC South. The road team had won the previous five games in this divisional rivalry. Tennessee’s Derrick Henry ran for 113 yards as he topped the 100-yard mark for a sixth straight divisional game. Quarterback Carson Wentz started for the Colts despite sprained ankles and threw for 194 years. The 0-3 Colts are off to their worst start since 2011.

— Jameis Winston threw two touchdown passes, Malcolm Jenkins returned an interception for a score and the New Orleans Saints beat the New England Patriots 28-13. A week after a career-low passer rating Winston showed better command of the offense, completing 13 of 21 passes for 128 yards. Taysom Hill ran for a touchdown and Alvin Kamara rushed 24 times for 89 yards. Patriots rookie Mac Jones threw three interceptions, two leading to Saints touchdowns. New Orleans’ defense sacked Jones three times and hit him 11. The rookie finished 30 of 51 for 270 yards and a touchdown.

— Joe Burrow threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns and the Cincinnati Bengals handled the listless Pittsburgh Steelers 24-10. Burrow connected on a 17-yard strike to Tyler Boyd. He also found rookie Ja’Marr Chase for 34-yard and 9-yard scores as the Bengals (2-1) won at Heinz Field for the first time since 2015. Ben Roethlisberger completed 38 of 57 passes for 318 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Steelers.

— Josh Allen quieted his early season critics by throwing four touchdown passes and rushing for another as the Buffalo Bills routed Washington 43-21. Allen finished 32 of 43 for 358 yards and surpassed the 100-touchdown plateau in his 47th career start. Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke (HY’-nih-kee) struggled in his first career road start by going 14 of 24 for 212 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

— Younghoe Koo kicked a 40-yard field goal on the final play and the Atlanta Falcons beat the New York Giants 17-14 to give coach Arthur Smith his first NFL win. It marked the second straight week the Giants lost on the final play of the game. Ryan hit passes of 28 yards to Cordarrelle Patterson and 25 to rookie tight end Kyle Pitts on the game-winning drive. Matt Ryan engineered to late drives and threw two touchdowns to rally the Falcons. It spoiled a day when the Giants retired the jersey of two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.

— Byron Murphy intercepted two passes, including one he returned for a touchdown following a botched trick play, and the Arizona Cardinals rallied to beat the skidding Jacksonville Jaguars 31-19. The Cardinals improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2015. The 0-3 Jaguars lost their 18th straight game, leaving them eight shy of the NFL record for futility. Jacksonville coach Urban Meyer got the spark he had been looking for when Jamal Agnew returned a missed field goal a record-tying 109 yards for a score. But it was all Arizona down the stretch.
