Boothe, Williams Again Race for District 89 Representative Seat

It’s a heated race in Pike County for who will represent District 89 in the Alabama House.
Alan Boothe and Joel Lee Williams faced off in 1998 in the democratic primary that went into a runoff.
Boothe won and has held the seat for the past 16 years. He’s run unopposed since then. But once again, Williams and Boothe will be on the ballot on November 4th.
State Rep. Alan Boothe (R) said, “I am a representative of all the people not just a select few.”
And Alan Boothe’s been district 89’s state representative for more than a decade. A two year old when he took the seat can now vote in this general election. He says his length of the term works in his constituents’ favor.
Rep. Boothe said, “The assignments of the Way and Means Education committee on which I serve is there because of seniority. I am better able to represent the education community being a member of that committee than I would be had I not been a member….whether that’s the right system or wrong system that’s not for me to say but that’s the way the system is.”
He said, “I have voted for every teacher pay raise since I was elected.” On this the two candidates agree, both saying they want to see teacher’s get a pay raise.
Joel Lee Williams, district 89 candidate (D) said, “At some point you just say enough is enough we need to start doing things that make sense. Cutting teacher pay and raising legislative pay makes no sense. The accountability act makes no sense.”
Those are some of the reason Joel Lee Williams is in the race, after facing off against Boothe 16 years ago in the democratic primary for this very same district. He’s been a lawyer in Troy for the past 33 years.
“I have written legislation so I wouldn’t be relying on lobbyists to tell me what a piece of legislation says. Not only have a read it, there’s a chance I may have written it,” Williams said. “I want to be your lawyer in Montgomery,” he said.
Will there be a runoff like 16 years ago? Voters will decide on November 4th.
Both candidates expressed they are pro-life, pro-gun and anti-abortion.
