Former ALEA Secretary Spencer Collier Named Selma Police Chief

Selma Mayor Darrio Melton has announced that former Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Secretary Spencer Collier has been hired as the city’s new police chief.

“We’re excited to welcome Chief Collier to Selma,” Melton said in a statement. “I’m confident his wide range of expertise in law enforcement will benefit our city and help move us forward,” Melton said.

Collier served as the state’s first Secretary of Law Enforcement from 2013 to 2016. He oversaw realignment of 12 state agencies to establish the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). Collier ultimately managed a staff of 1,400 individuals and a budget of $150 million.

“I see so much history and opportunity in Selma, especially under the leadership of Mayor Melton. I’m proud to join the team and work with Selma’s officers to prioritize public safety,” Collier said.

Collier was fired from his job as head of ALEA. He has said he was fired in retaliation for discovering that Gov. Robert Bentley had an inappropriate relationship with Bentley’s former senior adviser Rebekah Mason. Collier has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit.

Collier will take over as Selma’s Police Chief effective February 1.
