Prattville-Autauga Humane Society Expansion Construction Underway

Thousands of strays come into the Prattville-Autauga Humane Society every year, and the numbers are growing.

Now, the organization will finally have more space to house those homeless animals. The humane society is constructing a brand new building, an expansion that adds about 2,800 square feet–with half of that heated. That will double the amount of kennel space.

Right now, the shelter can house about 85 animals a month. Last year, the shelter took in about 3,000 animals altogether.

The expansion will cost about $173,000.  The humane society has raised almost all of that money over the last three years, but is asking the county commission to help pay for some of the $26,000 remainder, so the organization can avoid taking out a loan.

“We have a lot of stray dogs, especially out in the rural areas of the county, and when you call animal control, he’s right there to pick them up, and a lot of times here, they’re overcrowded or you get court orders sometimes to pick up dogs and you have no place for them. Now I think that’s going to be eliminated,” said Autauga County Commissioner Carl Johnson.

Humane Society officials hope to finish construction by the end of December.

If you can help with a monetary donation or supplies for the animals, you can visit the humane society’s website here.
