Flooding Raises Student Safety Concerns at R.C. Hatch High School

From the West Alabama Newsroom–

A recurring issue with flooding is forcing staff and students at a Uniontown school to pick up and move for their own safety.

More than a hundred students from Pre-K to 1st grade are in classes located under the gym at R.C. Hatch High School in Uniontown.

The flooding has raised concerns about student health and safety but officials at the school say student safety is even more important than their own.

“Because we are in charge of these children and their safety comes before our safety,” said Acting Assistant Principal Earnestine Burrell.

“We made sure that it was safe before we brought them back down.”

Superintendent John Heard says the classes will be moving out of the gym basement and into the newest wing at the old elementary school.

Heard says the space should be ready in the next few weeks.
