Tuskegee University’s received $600,000 for electric transportation research and that money’s also being used to connect the university with the community through education programs.

Tuskegee professors say they expect more than half the cars on the road to be electric and hybrid by 2025.

John Scruggs said, Tuskegee University Physics, Aerospace Engineering student said, “I believe that electric vehicles…it may sound cliche, but are the future. It reduces our biological imprint on the fossil fuels that we use. It’s great for the environment it employs people. I don’t see a downside to it.”

One downside is the electric cars battery life, but a large part of the grant project is develop a new high powered battery. Tuskegee is one of four universities part of the grant project. Two of the other universities are in Florida and one is in Hawaii.  The university is also teaming up with Alabama Power to create a curriculum on renewable energy and electric transportation. It’ll be the first of its kind.
