Bridge Crossing Jubilee Shifts into High Gear in Selma

From the West Alabama Newsroom–

The annual Jubilee shifted into high gear with a full slate of activities on tap Friday.

The first full day of activities included an education summit at Wallace Community College Selma.

It featured a series of educational workshops that were all open and free to the public.

Faya Rose Toure is a co-founder and co-coordinator of the Jubilee.

“People think it’s just a march or just a festival, said Toure.

“There are so many workshops on immigration, labor, women’s rights, youth’s rights, the criminal justice system and all of it’s designed to understand that every issue is a voting issue,” she said.

“If you want better schools, elect officials who want better schools. If you want to reform the criminal justice system, elect elected officials who want to do that.”

The day’s activities also included musical and dramatic performances, the annual Mock Trial at the Dallas County Courthouse and “A Public Conversation” featuring various national and local community leaders.

Each of those events were open and free to the public.

The was a $12 dollar charge for admission to the annual Stomp-Out-the-Vote step show at the School of Discovery auditorium.

The Children’s Sojourn over the Edmund Pettus Bridge was cancelled after a dispute between Jubilee organizers and city leaders over city fees.
