From the West Alabama Newsroom–  All county offices and schools in Perry County were closed today — for what may be the only official holiday in the country held in honor of President Barack Obama.

The Obama holiday festivities wrapped up with the annual parade in downtown Marion Monday morning. The celebration also included a health fair, a church service and the annual Unity Breakfast.

The holiday commemorates President Obama’s historic run to the White House in 2008.

“That’s a big thing you know,” said Perry County resident MacArthur Dobyne. “Less than fifty years after we get the right to vote to have a black president, you know some people never thought they would see it.”

The Obama holiday is held each year in Marion on the weekend before the second Monday in November.
