State Vault Holds Myriad of Unclaimed Treasure

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Alabama doesn’t have a lottery, but a person could bring up a government website and find himself 17 cents in dividends, or hundreds of dollars in money long forgotten — all free, if their claim is true.

Young Boozer, the Alabama state treasurer, said there is a lot to look for on the state’s unclaimed property site.

Some of the booty in the state’s vault over the years included gold, silver certificates and even a gold medal. The site allows people to make claims on assets forgotten.

The state treasurer is in care of about $560 million in assets. It sounds like a lot, but Boozer said the number built up because of about 5.2 million transactions over time.
