From the West Alabama Newsroom–   A Perry County woman is facing an attempted murder charge  after authorities say she gave birth to a newborn baby then dumped it in the trash.

Authorities say twenty year old Stephanie Coats of Newbern is looking at ten years to life if she’s convicted of trying to kill the baby.

They say the charges against Coats could have been avoided.

They say there are other options available to expectant mothers who don’t want their babies.

“There’s the Jodi Brooks Law which means that you can place your child at any hospital in the state and there will be no questions asked and you won’t be charged,” said Perry County District Attorney Michael Jackson. “You don’t have to commit a crime.”

The baby was flown to a hospital in Birmingham where he’s listed in stable condition. There’s no word on the baby’s father — or if he will face any charges.
