Martin Luther King Jr. Events Continue Across Montgomery

Talented singers, dancers and artists from across Montgomery met tonight to remember Martin Luther King Jr. Several universities held events across Montgomery to commemorate his dream.

The official Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was on Monday but people all around Montgomery are continuing to celebrate the Civil Rights icon.

Singing filled the Davis Theater in downtown Montgomery Wednesday evening as choirs paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

There was also music, poetry, dancing and acting from both Troy University and Alabama State University students…all to remember the man who fought relentlessly for Civil Rights. Dr. Tommie Stewart organized the program.

“It’s a city-wide, multi-cultural, multi-denominational celebration,” he said. “We have talents and singers and members of various churches throughout Montgomery area and even some from Selma.”

Alabama News Network Anchor Darryl Hood emceed the event and several city leaders were in the audience, including Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange and Alabama State University President Gwendolyn Boyd.

“All people from all parts of the community coming together and being a part of a community and so this night represents that in a dramatic way,” Boyd said.

Dr. Stewart says the celebration is relevant to society today.

“As a matter of fact, it came about because of the climate in America today. The idea of a beloved community should not die.”

Just across town, another university was also remembering MLK. Huntingdon University held their annual convocation to remember Dr. King.

The Huntingdon Quartet, as well as other musical guests, sang a selection of hymns and Civil Rights anthems. Su Ofe is the Associate Vice President for Huntingdon Communications and says the event was a success.

“Almost every seat is full in there and I think that this is a message that Huntingdon students can carry out into the community and make a different in the world today,” she said.
