A controversial constitutional amendment passed overwhelmingly at the polls this past election day.

The amendment is aimed at preventing foreign laws, such as Sharia law from being used in Alabama courts.

Today the Pike County Republican Women held a discussion on this type of law. Sharia Law is religious islamic law covers all aspects of life, from politics to social issues.

And at the meeting an attorney with the foundation for moral law tried to shed some light on the topic and also talk about concerns about the spread of this ideology.

John Eidsmoe, Senior Counsel Foundation for Moral Law said, “We probably have less of a threat here in Alabama than other parts of the country, Michigan for example, Florida. Other places like this where Sharia Law is spreading a lot more, and the islamic population is larger and more aggressive. But if it can happen there, it can also happen here.”

Aaron Hagler, Asst. Professor of Middle Eastern History Troy University said, “It’s a body laws that’s a complete body of laws like we have here. And a lot of the laws that are in Sharia actually agree with laws that we have here, it’s just certain specific laws that people get worried about and those are not laws that really that I think have a chance of passing in an Alabama legislature.”

Some have questioned whether the constitutionality of the foreign law amendment could be raised in the courts.
