We’re getting closer to the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march.

The City of Montgomery has announced even more plans for the commemoration today.

We’ve heard a lot about plans for the anniversary, but now we have even more to look forward to.

In addition to events like a Patti LaBelle concert at ASU at the start of the month, the commemorative march will feature Dr. Martin Luther King’s only surviving daughter on the steps of the capitol.

“Every organization that had some role in the civil rights movement, particularly the selma to montgomery march, wants to do their own commemoration and their own interpretation and do it in their own way. We celebrate that, we welcome that, and we look forward to a full month of activities,” said Mayor Strange.

One of the biggest events will be lead up to the march to the capitol on the 27th. Students from all over Montgomery and Selma will retrace the steps and meet civil rights heroes from the time.

The city selected State Senator Quinton Ross to head up some of these student activities.

“Students were a major part of this movement. And what they have to realize is that while they’re young they still have an important role in shaping how our communities develop,” said Sen. Ross.

The whole event was held in the future civil rights museum on campus at St. Jude, the last stop before the final march to the capitol.

“We’ve done all this on a shoestring budget. Probably in about three or four weeks we should finish, deck the walls with photos and have some video footage. We have well over 100 or something different photos. A lot on our campus, a lot of what led here,” said Douglas Watson, Executive Director of St. Jude.
