The Last Day of August

REST OF THIS WEEK: We are going to see more sun than clouds, with hot temperatures as highs will be in the mid 90s through Friday. We continue to have easterly flow across the state, and that is allowing for somewhat drier air into the state, which is really limiting our rain chances. A few very isolated storms are certainly…

Lynching Memorial Update

The Equal Justice Initiative announces the lynching memorial and museum for Montgomery.

Montgomery is steeped in history, but as Equal Justice Initiative founder Bryan Stevenson told the CBS Early Show last week, there is something missing. “In Montgomery, there are 59 markers and monuments to the confederacy. Our two largest high schools are Robert E. Lee High and Jefferson Davis High. We don’t even have Martin Luther King Day, its Martin Luther…

Gov. Robert Bentley Appeals Court Decision on Refugees

Gov. Robert Bentley is appealing the dismissal of the state’s lawsuit against the federal government over refugee placement. The governor’s office said the appeal was filed Tuesday with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta. Bentley in January asked a federal judge to block refugees from coming to the state unless federal officials provided a full background check…

Hot, Breezy, and Mainly Dry

THE LAST DAYS OF AUGUST: The upper ridge is holding across the Deep South, and we continue to see little change in our day to day weather. This will continue through the rest of August, which is tomorrow. That means we are going to see more sun than clouds, with hot temperatures as highs will be in the mid 90s….

Finding Blessings After Hurricane Katrina 11 years ago

It was eleven years ago today much of New Orleans was under water. The levees broke after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Many families made their way to the River Region, including the Johnsons.

Roland Johnson and his wife, Suzanne, are still counting their blessings  11 years after Katrina forced them out of their New Orleans home. “It was like being in a war zone,”said Roland. “The smell was putrid,” said Suzanne. Roland came to Montgomery not really planning to stay. But when he went back to his flooded New Orleans home a week…

Staying Hot, Active Tropics

This week, a persistent forecast is expected through the middle of the week as the upper-level ridge will remain in place. Expect hot and humid days, muggy nights, with highs in the low to mid 90s with a very small chance of widely scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms on each day. Overnight lows will be in the 70s….

No More Parking in Median Downtown

Parking can be tricky in downtown Montgomery. Soon there will be even fewer spaces because of a new project about to start.

Right now Commerce Street  is divided by cars in the middle of the street. The City of Montgomery allows drivers to park in this median. But not for long. “We’re just concerned about someone stepping out of their car in open lane of traffic and there being an accident. And it’s not ‘if’ it happens, it’s ‘when’ it’s going to…

Mainly Dry and Hot Through the Weekend

RIDGE IN PLACE: Little day to day change in our weather through the weekend. Each day will feature plenty of sunshine as well as hot and humid conditions, but also each day we will see a few widely isolated showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. Rain chances are rather low, but not zero, and the chance…

Lottery Passes House

The lottery is one step closer to making it on the November ballot. The House passed the Lottery bill very late Thursday night.

The House started at 10 am Thursday and finally came to a decision just before midnight. But it was not without controversy. The House debated constitutional amendments to the bill through the day and evening. They first voted and the bill did not pass. They voted to reconsider. Then voted again and it did pass 64-35. Gov. Bentley told the media…
