Yanks fall as Bosox, Jays win
UNDATED (AP) — The American League wild-card race continues to change form. The latest standings have the New York Yankees leading the first wild card by one game over Boston, with the Blue Jays one game behind the Red Sox for the second wild-card. The Mariners are a half-game in back of the Bosox as Seattle hosts the Los Angeles Angels.
Rookie Wander Franco hit a two-run single in the ninth inning to give the Rays a 4-1 lead in a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. Nelson Cruz Jr. hit his 32st home run and Kevin Kiermaier hit a go-ahead single in the second inning to put Tampa Bay ahead to stay.
Joey Gallo and Brett Gardner slapped RBI singles in the ninth before Andrew Kittredge struck out Gary Sanchez and Rougned Odor (ROOG’-nehd oh-DOHR’) to complete Tampa Bay’s AL-leading 99th win.
Hunter Renfroe and Bobby Dalbec hit back-to-back home runs in a four-run sixth that pushed the Red Sox past Washington, 4-2. Renfroe’s three-run homer opened the scoring. Eduardo Rodriguez went 5-plus scoreless innings, allowing five fits as Boston won for just the second time in seven games.
The Blue Jays knocked off the Orioles, 6-4 as Danny Jansen smacked a two-run homer and collected three RBIs.
Steven Matz pitched seven solid innings and improved to 5-0 with a 2.90 ERA in nine starts since Aug. 10. Kelvin Gutierrez spoiled Matz’s shutout bid with a leadoff homer in the eighth.
Checking out the rest of Friday’s major league schedule:
— Matt Olson and Chad Pinder each homered in the Athletics’ 8-6 win over Houston, cutting the Astros’ lead over the White Sox to one game for home-field advantage in the division series. Sean Manaea (mah-NY’-ah) permitted two runs on seven hits through in 5 2/3 innings as the A’s ended a three-game losing streak.
— The Cardinals won for the 19th time in 20 games by knocking off the Cubs, 4-3 on Paul Goldschmidt’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. Tyler O’Neill homered twice and threw out the potential go-ahead run in the ninth inning for St. Louis.
— The Mets ended the Braves’ six-game winning streak as Brandon Nimmo homered twice to lead New York’s 4-3 victory over the NL East champs. Tylor Megill (TY’-lohr meh-GIHL’) allowed one hit in five scoreless innings as the Mets won for the fourth time in five games.
— Lance Lynn picked up his first win since July 25 by tossing one-run ball over five innings of the White Sox’s 8-1 trouncing of the Tigers. José Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) homered and drove in four runs for the AL Central champs.
— Bryce Harper had three hits, including a homer and double in the Phillies’ 5-0 shutout of the Marlins. Ranger Suárez pitched seven scoreless innings, extending his string without allowing a run to 21 and lowering his ERA to 1.35.
— Cole Tucker made a spectacular diving catch, then hit his first career grand slam to cap an eight-run eighth inning that sent the Pirates over the Reds, 9-2. Tucker also led off the first inning with a triple and made a spectacular catch in short right field.
— Austin Hedges and Bobby Bradley homered before Jose Ramirez finished with three RBIs in the Indians’ 9-4 drubbing of the Rangers. Eli Morgan allowed four runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings to win his third straight start.
— Hunter Dozier and Whit Merrifield each had three hits, with Dozier homering in the Royals’ 11-6 decision over the Twins. Salvador Perez was the lone Kansas City starter without a hit, leaving him with major league highs of 48 home runs and 121 RBIs.

Wainwright extended
UNDATED (AP) — Adam Wainwright isn’t ready to retire. Not after winning 17 games this season at age 40.
The Cardinals have announced that Wainwright has agreed to a contract for next season. The three-time All-Star will spend his 18th year with the Cardinals in 2022, tying Hall of Famer Jesse Haines for the most years as a pitcher with the team.
Wainwright is 17-7 with a 3.05 ERA this year and will ride a six-decision winning streak into the NL wild-card game next week.
Also in the majors:
— Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw exited Friday’s start with left forearm discomfort in the second inning against the Brewers. Kershaw gave up three runs and two hits on 42 pitches over 1 2/3 innings in his final regular-season start. He didn’t pitch from July 4 to Sept. 12 while on the injured list with left forearm inflammation.

Hawkeyes enjoy a laugher against mistake-prone Terps
UNDATED (AP) — Fifth-ranked Iowa did nothing Friday to cause AP poll voters from dropping them in the rankings.
Spencer Petras threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the Hawkeyes blasted Maryland, 51-14 at College Park. The 5-0 Hawkeyes intercepted Taulia Tagovailoa five times and outscored the Terrapins 31-0 in the second quarter to turn the game into a laugher. Tagovailoa had thrown only one interception all season while leading the Big Ten in passing yards.
The Terps finished with seven turnovers overall, four in the second quarter.
Maryland was trying for its first 5-0 start in 20 years.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL-WISCONSIN-ALVAREZ
Football team to be named after Alvarez
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin is naming the playing field at Camp Randall Stadium after former Badgers football coach and athletic director Barry Alvarez.
Chancellor Rebecca Blank said the playing field will be known as “Barry Alvarez Field at Camp Randall Stadium.”
He coached Wisconsin from 1990-2005 and set a program record for career coaching victories, winning three Rose Bowl titles. The program that had gone 9-36 in the four years before his arrival.
Alvarez was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

Bears taking time naming QB
UNDATED (AP) — Will it be Andy Dalton or rookie Justin Fields under center when the Chicago Bears take on Detroit on Sunday?
Dalton and Fields are dealing with injuries, but Fields has been able to go through full practices the entire week while Dalton has been limited every day.
Dalton is suffering from a bone bruise to his left knee, which caused him to miss last weekend’s loss to Cleveland.
Fields was roughed up by the Browns in his first NFL start, sacked nine times while throwing for just one net passing yard.
In other NFL news:
— Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was back at practice Friday after missing the previous two days with a back issue. Jackson was listed as a full participant in practice by the Ravens. Though Jackson is questionable for Sunday’s game at Denver, offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Thursday he didn’t think the injury was serious.
— The Seahawks expect wide receiver Tyler Lockett to play Sunday against San Francisco despite a hip injury that slowed him in practice this week. The 49ers could be down two more starting cornerbacks for the game but are holding out hope star tight end George Kittle can play. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that slot cornerback K’Waun Williams will miss the game against the Seahawks with a calf injury and outside cornerback Josh Norman is doubtful with a chest injury.
— Wide receivers Julio Jones and A.J. Brown are among six Titans who won’t play Sunday against the Jets. The Titans declared both of the Pro Bowl receivers out along with outside linebacker Bud Dupree, who didn’t play despite being dressed last week against Indianapolis. Also out are three-time Pro Bowl punter Brett Kern and rookie cornerback Caleb Farley.
— Falcons receiver Russell Gage will miss his second straight game with an ankle injury. Atlanta has also ruled out defensive lineman Marlon Davidson for Sunday’s game against Washington because of an ailing ankle.
— Washington has activated wide receiver Curtis Samuel after he missed the first three games of the season with a lingering groin injury. Coach Ron Rivera expects Samuel to play Sunday at the Falcons.
— The Bills will be without safety Jordan Poyer and left guard Jon Feliciano for their game against the Texans on Sunday. Poyer is sidelined by a left ankle injury, and Feliciano is out due to a concussion.
— Jets coach Robert Saleh says receiver Denzel Mims will be active for the Sunday’s game against Tennessee. The second-round pick from last year was a healthy scratch the past two weeks. Veteran wide receiver Jamison Crowder is also expected to make his season debut after missing the first game with COVID-19 and the last two with a groin injury.

Ohio State tallies over 2,800 instances of abuse by team doc
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State University has now tallied over 2,800 instances of alleged, decades-old sexual misconduct by the late team doctor Richard Strauss. That’s according to its latest campus crime data released Friday.
The school says more than 170 total instances of rape and more than 2,600 instances of fondling attributed to Strauss came to light between 2018 and 2020. The 2020 data in the report adds dozens of instances of rape and about 470 instances of fondling attributed to Strauss, who died in 2005.
Hundreds of men allege he abused them, and some of those men reported multiple instances. They say the school failed to stop Strauss despite students raising concerns during his 20 years at the university.
Ohio State has apologized, and it announced settlements with 185 plaintiffs totaling nearly $47 million and with dozens more people for amounts not yet disclosed.

NWSL calls off weekend games after allegations against coach, Baird resigns
UNDATED (AP) — National Women’s Soccer League Commissioner Lisa Baird has resigned after some 19 months on the job amid allegations that a former coach engaged in sexual harassment and misconduct.
Baird’s resignation was announced by the league late Friday, a day after The Athletic published the accounts of two former players who claimed misconduct, including sexual coercion, by North Carolina coach Paul Riley.
Claims by two former players of sexual coercion against Paul Riley led the Courage to fire him. FIFA’s judicial bodies have opened an investigation into the sexual harassment scandal.
FIFA told The Associated Press it was “deeply concerned” by the case and will now be seeking further details from American soccer authorities about the issues raised.
PGA-SANDERSON FARMS
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Will Zalatoris set the course record with an 11-under 61 for a share the lead with Nick Watney and Sahith Theegala through two rounds of the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Zalatoris was voted the PGA Tour rookie of the year last season despite not having full status. He made it look so simple at the Country Club of Jackson that his longest putt for par was 3 feet.
Watney opened with four birdies in six holes and dropped only one shot on his way to a 66.
LPGA-SHOPRITE LPGA
Ewart Shadoff, Ryu share lead
GALLOWAY, N.J. (AP) — Jodi Ewart Shadoff and So Yeon Ryu share the first-round lead at the LPGA’s ShopRite LPGA in New Jersey.
Ewart Shadoff opened with a 6-under 65 as she tries to shake off a slump in which she hasn’t made a cut since June. Ryu birdied the last three holes to take a piece of the lead.
