The flags were waving proudly all along Dexter Avenue as the veterans day parade moved through the city.

This day means a lot for many people, including retired Cecil Jones and his wife Hatty.

The two were married this year and this is their first Veterans Day together. Jones says days like this are very special to him.

“What stands out, actually to share in a day like today here stands out. And also the ability to do something for other veterans,” said Cecil Jones.

After the big marching bands finished in the streets, the capitol sounds concert band moved to city hall, where the sounds of the Battle Hymn of the Republic filled the room. Hatty Jones says marrying a veteran has changed the way she views those who have served our country.

“It’s changed my outlook a great deal just knowing that some of the things they’ve been through. And some of them come home and they’re not able to handle situations at home. I just pray for them and pray for their families,” said Jones.

MSG Michael Voss has been deployed several times overseas, including two tours of Afghanistan. He says his time as an airman has made him a better person.

“The deployments were good. They’re kind of hard on missing your family and your home unit and friends but you make your way through them a slightly changed person but better,” said Voss.
