University Students Return Home Safely From Israel

A group of Troy University students were less than 10 miles from the Gaza Strip this summer. But came home early with the growing safety concerns.Â
Â
A group of seven students were at the Ashkelon archaeological dig.
Â
Two of them have been there four summers in a row and say they haven’t feared for their safety, even though they would see rockets frequently.Â
Â
They worked alongside students from Harvard, Wheaton and Boston College excavating. And they say this has given them a headstart in the field of archaeology.Â
Â
The university made the decision to have them come home a week early. Even with the violence, they said they would go back in a heartbeat.Â
Â
Joel Jackson, a supervisor at site and an undergrad studying anthropology said, “It’s a gorgeous place full and rich in history. There are a few rockets but usually that’s not the case. This year was just different. I just encourage people to check it out it is great.”Â
Â
Today, 15 people died and dozens were wounded at a U.N. School in the Gaza Strip.
Â
Palestinian officials say the victims had been trying to find refuge from the fighting outside and were killed by Israeli tank shells.
