The Wetumpka Police Department is using body cameras to make sure its officers and you are accountable.

Officers there have just received 22 body cameras — each patrol officer will get one. Police say with all the recent nationwide discrepancies between officers and citizens, like that in Ferguson Missouri, helped spur the decision. Police say they’ll record on domestic violence calls or anything involving a weapon. They also have an archive system that will keep all the video.

“So if somebody pulls a gun or does something like that, once they hit that button, it actually records 30 second prior to actually needing the camera,” Said Lt. Ed Gumpf with the Wetumpka Police Department.

The 22 cameras cost about $16,000 paid by city funds. Police will be learning to use the cameras this week and hope to have the department using them on the job by the end of this week.
