Troy’s Brandon Silvers named to Manning Award Watch List

TROY, Ala. (  – Troy junior Brandon Silvers was one of just 30 quarterbacks named to the Manning Award Watch List, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Monday. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.

Silvers finished third in the Sun Belt last season with 216.2 passing yards per game, 20 touchdown passes, a 61.2 completion percentage and a 137.50 quarterback rating. The native of Orange Beach, Ala., threw just seven interceptions on the season – fewest among Sun Belt quarterbacks with at least 150 attempts. Silvers threw five touchdown passes in the opening half of Troy’s blowout at New Mexico State, it was the most by a Troy quarterback since 1993 and the fourth most in Sun Belt history.

As a freshman, Silvers broke Sam Bradford’s NCAA record for completion percentage by a freshman as he completed 70.5 percent (191-of-271) of his attempts on the year. Silvers has thrown just 10 interceptions in 393 career pass attempts over his two years as Troy’s starting quarterback.

The Watch List features players from all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences. There are 15 seniors on the list while the junior class is represented by 11 quarterbacks and the sophomore class has three. The winner will be announced Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Troy opens the 2016 season on Sept. 3 when it plays host to Austin Peay in the first of six home games in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
