Tuskegee University officials are announcing changes following this weekend’s mass shooting on campus that left one person dead and 16 others injured.

At a news conference that could be seen on the WAKA Action 8 News Facebook page, Tuskegee University President Dr. Mark Brown said that Tuskegee University is no longer an open campus. People entering will now be required to show ID.

Brown said that the university has hired a new campus security leader who will conduct a full review of what happened.

Brown said the university was prepared to welcome a lot of people to this weekend’s 100th homecoming celebration, but the event where the shooting happened was not approved by university officials.

As Action 8 News has reported, the shooting happened at around 1:40AM Sunday. 18-year-old La’Tavion Johnson of Troy was killed. University leaders say he was not a Tuskegee University student.

The State Bureau of Investigation has arrested 25-year-old Jaquez Myrick of Montgomery on charges that he possessed a handgun that had a machine gun conversion device. They say he was seen leaving the scene. He is facing a federal charge of possessing a machine gun.

ALEA is asking for the public’s assistance in this case. Anyone with information is asked to submit tips at 1-800-CALL-FBI and upload any digital files regarding this incident online at: fbi.gov/tuskegeeshooting24

Classes will cancelled once again on Tuesday, November 12, to allow students time to grieve.
