It was a big day for the town of Pike Road as the much anticipated school opening this fall just got 53 new teachers and an assistant principal.

Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Freeman says she was very pleased with the applications they got.

“Wow, such amazing teachers applied to be teachers of Pike Road. We were just thrilled of the level and quality of people,” said Freeman.

Freeman says she wanted teachers who had a passion for the Pike Road Way, leading with their heart and head.

“We wanted people who had a real heart for children, who love all children, who see the potential in all children and have a real passion for learning. We wanted people who are life long learners,” said Freeman.

The new teachers say they are excited about what they will be doing in the classroom this fall.

“We’re going to have a student center environment,” said 4th grade teacher Linda Levi. “The students are going to learn on their own. They are going to investigate. They are going to discover. They are going to answer questions that normally teachers answer.”

Terrance Baldwin will be the new music teacher.

“Music, everyone loves music. It’s therapeutic, so I want to use some of the therapeutic powers of music to create better people and better learners,” said Baldwin.

The school is a dream that has been in the works for almost two decades and finally has its own teachers…and will soon open its doors.

“To search all over Alabama, meet with some of the finest teacher candidates, select these 53. It’s a day that says to the people of Pike Road, we are almost there!” said Mayor Gordon Stone.
