Some people are fearful that Alabama could be home to more gambling addicts if legislation leads to an expansion of gambling in the state.

The Alabama Council On Compulsive Gambling is responsible for helping people who are addicted. The group says not only do compulsive gamblers impact themselves and family members, but also the entire state economically.

“A problem gambler in Alabama is right now costing the state anywhere from two to three thousand dollars per person, per year. Because once they’ve gambled away all their resources, then they turn to the state to try and help them out,” Roger Olsen with the group told Alabama News Network.

The Alabama Council On Compulsive Gambling is neither for or against the bill that is under consideration.  According to the organization, two to five percent who start out as responsible gamblers become problem gamblers.
