MONTGOMERY, AL — The Wetumpka High School softball team played three games on Saturday, with the final one ending late into the night, and with Indians as champions.
Wetumpka won the AHSAA 6A state championship against Southside-Gadsen by winning the final game 3-2. The last run was a walk off by Destinee Brewer who stole home on a passed ball.
It was emotional night for both teams, and Wetumpka coach Randy Belyeu was happy that this team could bring back Wetumpka’s first ever softball state championship.
“Great joy as you can imagine,” said Belyeu. “Hard work pays off. They’ve been conditioning for 9 months and practicing hard. I’ve had most of these kids for 6 and 5 years. You can’t ask for anything better than this.”
Wetumpka also played Southside-Gadsen two times earlier that day. The Indians won game one 6-1 to get to the championship. They lost game two 5-4. in extra innings on a walk-off error.
