If you drive the highways and backroads of some of Alabama’s most rural counties, then you’re driving on some of the deadliest roads in the state.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Autoinsurancecenter.com, the highways in Lowndes County are the second deadliest in Alabama.

The sheriff’s office says 12 deputies patrol the entire county, which has a population of just over 10,000. Authorities say the biggest safety issues they face are speeding and drivers not wearing their seat belts.

“We try to educate them on the side of the road, not just writing tickets. But to educate them and let them know we are out here for your safety,” Sgt. Ed Jones of the Lowndes Co. Sheriff’s Office told Alabama News Network.

Jones also says it’s important for the public to help law enforcement keep the county’s roads safe.  If you see someone driving recklessly, report them.
