Hyundai shut down production for a little while to take in the big moment.
The 2015 limited edition sonata rolled off the line on a red carpet to a wave of applause.
Spokesman Robert Burns says the sites production is moving at a record breaking pace.
“We made it in about 10 years and 25 days. Compared to competitors when we did some research most of them averaged around 12 years. So we beat them by two years give or take so that’s pretty impressive,” said Burns.
The plant has been open since 2005, steadily increasing production. But it’s not just the numbers that mean so much to Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, it’s the thousands of people working there.
“Financially it’s a tremendous benefit. What’s more important is the human side of the equation. The team members are so active in our communities. Everything good that happens here happens with their support, with team members participating and working,” said Strange.
So what’s next for the plant? Hyundai has already invested almost 2 billion dollars in the buildings and Burns says he hopes this is only the beginning.
“I think what’s really important is we have a great track record here, we have the opportunity to continue to grow, basically grow the facility in the near future we hope and we all should be very proud of that. Our team members show a lot of pride in building the vehicles every day,” said Burns.
