Jospeh Ossington is reunited with his dog, Toby, after the holiday weekend.

“He got out two times Saturday from being scared. This morning, I went outside  and the gate was open. I couldn’t find him anywhere. Luckily, he was here,” said Ossington.

Toby and many other dogs are in the same situation after getting  loose over the weekend. And owners are left trying to find them.

“Some wait days on end, thinking their dog is just going to come home, so it does place a financial strain, cleaning, watering, feeding. It takes quite a bit of labor dollars to actually care for the animals that come in,” said Exec. Director Steven Tears.

In fact, the humane society prepared themselves for the influx by moving some employees around.

“Our 2nd shift works anywhere from 2-11, 2-12 at night trying to get all the stray dogs that have gotten out because of the fireworks,” said Main officer Robert Bryant.

That’s why Tears says it’s important for pet owners to plan ahead as well.

“If they are going to be fireworks, bring your dogs in. A lot of people think ‘oh they’ll stay.’ I’m here to tell you they don’t. If they get spooked, they will go through your fence, under your fence, however they need to get out,” said Tears.

The good news is, they say they have had some success with reuniting pets and owners. And they hope others will know to check out their shelter, so families like the Ossington’s can get back to normal.

“My son will be relieved. This is his dog. He will be happy,” said Ossington.
