A black Mississippi man who actively supported the Confederate battle flag and it’s heritage – – died in a one-car accident over the weekend.
He was coming home from a confederate monument rally Sunday in birmingham when he was allegedly run off the road.
Photos of Anthony Hervey show him often dressed in Confederate regalia, supporting his state flag and the Confederate Battle symbol.
To Hervey, along with many Confederate activists… it was all about heritage.
“It’s not to represent hate. When I look at that flag. I think of my great grandfather that was captured in Selma. He fought under that flag,” said Henry Howard, Confederate Activist.
Arlene Barnum of Oklahoma is also a strong supporter of the Confederate Battle flag…even though it does draw criticism for her.
“I’m black myself and even black people are attacking me. They are calling me a South sell out. It’s a white flag, no ma’am that Southern cross flag belongs to me too,” said Barnum.
Barnum was with Hervey at the Birmingham rally over the weekend.
And she was in the car when they wrecked.
She tells me it happened when a car drove up beside them on the highway.
“Silver or gray car. They came up on the driver’s side. They were about 4 black men and they looked angry,” said Barnum.
She says the other car ran them off the road and Hervey lost control.
“I don’t know if he over corrected not sure what happened. But the vehicle spun out of control when we got back in the pavement and went across to the right hand side of the road into the ditch and that’s when the vehicle started tumbling and flipped hard. I’ve never felt anything like that in my life.”
Barnum later found out …Hervey died in the wreck.
And she, herself, suffered a broken ankle and along with some minor injuries.
And as for the fight for the Confederate Battle flag and monuments to stay she says she is even more passionate now.
“Ma’am, I have no choice. A man has died. I live. He died. I got to carry on,” said Barnum.
