The third annual Alabama Angels Pageant was held at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church.
It’s a chance for 127 people with physical or mental disabilities to shine on stage. All the participants were called up on stage one by one. They were escorted by a serviceman and then they all were given a crown and banner. This weekend also marked the 25 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act went into effect. Organizers say while daily struggles have improved, there’s still more work to be done.
Kerrie Juliana, Team Leader Alabama Angels Pageant said, “I think that we have to start becoming as people, more accepting and less judgmental. The laws will take care of themselves, that’s we have lobbyists and lawyers but I think where we are going now is really up to people. To take a look at someone and not see anything but a person.”
The makeup, hair, and dresses were all donated for the angels thanks to sponsors.
