Carver head football coach Billy Gresham hosted his first-ever youth football camp Saturday.

The camp was sponsored by the Alabama Family Youth Iniative which engages youth and their families in a comprehensive program focused on the enhancement of self, education, and elimination of crime and substance abuse.

The camp is designed to give each individual athlete a solid foundation in the basic fundamentals needed to excel in football.

“Every kid out here is going to learn every position. No one knows their path in life in this sport, whether if they play football or not, we just want something that they can take back home with them,” said Coach Billy Gresham.

More than 40 elementary and middle school kids received hands- on experience from Carver coaches and former players including Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson, and Alabama linebacker Shaun Hamilton.

“Just coming back and giving back to the community and seeing kids who have the same aspirations that I have….I remember when I was a little kid one upon a time, just helping them out and helping them get closer to their dreams,” said Alabama linebacker Shaun Hamilton.

“Its always great coming back and letting the kids see your face– like I said we are a big influence and part of their life and just being around the kids making them happy is one of the things I like to do in life,” Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson said.

Johnson thre to the kids in a mini 7-on-7 drill, something he is enjoying before the Tigers start fall camp. “We are off this week before we report on the third. I’m still going to workout, but I’m just ready for the season. I’ve never been so ready to play football, I’m just ready to get back out there with my teammates,” Johnson said.

The camp cost $25, and all the money raised Saturday will help go towards creating the first-ever  Wolverine Wall of Fame, which will recognize former coaches and former players who have lettered in college.

“It’s so they can have something when the come back to Carver in the hallways. They can have something to look at, and bring their families back and they’ll have their pictures and everything to show that they played in college and they all played at Carver,” said Coach Gresham.

“Not everyone can say they’ve played ball on the collegiate level. It’s such a huge honor to just to be put on the wall of fame with other great athletes from our school,” said Hamilton.

Coach Gresham hopes to have the new Wolverine Wall of Fame complete by August 21st.
