The DARE program is making a return to Elmore County.

When students go back to school next month, they’ll be taking part in the antI-drug program.

The most obvious sign that DARE is back is this patriotic Mustang GT.

It’s supposed to catch the eyes of students so the police department’s new DARE officer can start the conversation about drugs.

“I’m very excited about the opportunities for our students here in the Wetumpka community. I know as a former teacher I remember the DARE program in our schools and I know what it did for the kids and the community, so again I’m just excited that we’re bringing it back,” said Elmore County Superintendent Andre Harrison.

The program will focus on 5th graders this school year, and hopefully expand. A 20 year veteran of the police department was selected as the DARE officer, who now has weeks of training under his belt. Mayor Jerry Willis says it’s never too early to tackle the topic of drugs.

“I think all in all this was just the right thing at the right time because you’re either going to deal with it now or you’re going to deal with it later on the streets,” said Willis.

Over the course of 10 weeks, students will learn about how to say no to drugs and Superintendent Harrison says it’s not just the students who will be learning.

“I think is going to touch a lot of our kids and not just the students but also the teachers. To talk about the awareness of what’s going on out there in society and how we can offset and be a change in it in our students lives that can benefit from the dare program,” said Harrison.
