The Montgomery County School Board  met for the first time since board member Beverly Ross passed away last week.

They announced a Ross’ replacement as Roberta Collins. But not everyone is happy about it.

“I’ve already played the game of ‘hey, come get your person to talk,’ and they do, and the last minute they get hired. I know the game here,” School board member Lesa Keith told the rest of the board.

Keith spoke out on the sudden replacement of Ross.

While Keith says she does not have a problem with Collins, she says the process was not open for public comment.

“You have to understand, the public was who elected us to be their representatives, they should have been aware of the process. In the process, we have 30 days. To make it in less than a week– to me smells of a rat. I can’t say it any better,” said Keith.

Chairman of the board Melissa Snowden says there was a reason why the board moved so quickly.

“We have a lot of projects that we are working on. We just felt like we needed 7 board members. Really felt like Roberta Collins was the right lady for the job. She’s very well rounded and comes to a lot of our board meetings. Very in tuned with what we are trying to do.”

While there was some debate on the issue, the vote went forward with 5 votes.
