Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office cracking down on people driving ATVs on roads

The Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office says it will crack down on people illegally driving ATVs on roads after several recent incidents.

“We’ve had several incidents and ATV accidents where they’ve collided with motor vehicles on public roads,” Crenshaw County Chief Deputy Michael Strickland told Action 8 News.

“Back in March of last year, we had a 16-year-old who was critically injured when he hit a vehicle, and a couple of weeks ago we had two juveniles who got lifeflighted out and it just keeps growing,” he said.

As ATV sales increase, illegal use and injury increase, especially in rural areas where residents could face criminal charges for illegal use.

“It’s not just accidents that we have to deal with. We got people going out on dirt roads, which are classified as public roads, doing donuts, tearing up the roads and slinging. Them messing up, causing the highway department to go out there and fix them. So technically, you could face a criminal charge for criminal mischief,” Strickland said.

He says ATVs are off-road vehicles and should only be enjoyed on private property or at ATV parks to decrease the chance of bodily harm.
